On the subject of humour in these situations, I decided to see what the Daily Show would do. Correctly, they acknowledged the event, but then ignored it. Interestingly, Jon Stewart presented this as a personal, psychological response, whereas I think in fact it was the only possible one for a show of that format. It was a very clever method of dodging accusations of cynicism or tastelessness, and he got a decent joke out of it, too.
